My ship in Voyage Century Online is an adventure ship and with my adventure ship I travel around the world (hmmm, that sounded wrong), I mean, I travel across the world map, he he he, in it exploring and discovering new things. I rarely go into battle fields and trading bores me to death so i don't do that too. Because of that, my Sea Battle and Eloquence are pretty low in level.
Now, Sea Battle is very important. Training it allows you to gain offensive ship skills like Cannon Fight, Grappling and Ramming. With my sea battle only at level 31, my level 6 adventure ship has very low offensive capabilities. My cannon fight skill is only level 3 which limits me to level 3 cannons. My grappling skill is only level 2 and my ramming skill is only at level 3 which only allows me to equip a level 2 and a level 3 grapple and ram respectively.
With very poor ship offensive capabilities, emerging victorious in a sea fight is difficult and because of that I have to rely on my land fighting skills. With decent land fighting, I am able to hold my ground against NPC Pirates and Pirate Bosses who are even 1 ship level higher than me.
It's not really an amazing feat, I've seen lower level battleships sink higher level NPC Pirates with their high level cannons easily. I guess, my ship kinda suck at sea fight.
Anyway, cannon fighting doesn't really interest me that much. I find boarding ships much interesting. Yes, it takes more time to sink a ship specially if you are fighting NPC Pirates/Pirate Bosses that are the same level as you or even higher but it 's fun (for me at least).
My typical boarding pattern is like this:
- Smugglers, once in the scene I will stop my ship, turn to the side, wait for them to get close, fire my cannons when in range and grapple to board once close enough enough. If grappling fails then I'll chase then grapple again.
- Raiders, once in the scene I will target then ram and after collision I will grapple to board. If grappling fails then we will circle each other trading cannon fires then grapple again.
- Armed, once in the scene I will target the nearest pirate, ram it while auto-fire is on then grapple to board after collision. If it fails then I'll just move around wait for the skill to recharge then try again.
The most important thing I like about boarding is that pirates will randomly drop drawings and if you defeat a Pirate Boss like Barbarosa II and Emanuel Wynn you'll get a bunch of drawings and some other goodies too. I've learned the following by boarding:
- Smuggler Ship Captain will drop weapon drawings. I've also heard that they'll also drop rare labor uniform drawings but I haven't picked up any labor uniform drawings from them. (that's why it's rare, he he he he)
- Armed Ship Captainwill drop navy uniform and hat drawings
- Raider Ship Captain will drop infantry uniform and hat drawings
I think having a decent land fighting capability and being able to take damage as you approach to board are the most important things a player should consider in boarding ships. Of course, don't forget to bring some potions just in case something goes wrong.
