Blah! Blah! Blah!, Second Life, Virtual Life

Tough! Really! Tough!

Second Life

I found out that Linden Labs has released a new set of last names, so I went to Second Life’s website to check them out. One of the last name added to the list was “Morales” and at that instant the name “Erik Morales” popped into my mind. Erik Morales is a former WBC/WBO World Champion, now retired. He was defeated by Manny Pacquiao twice. Eventhough, I’m Filipino I like Erik Morales better than the PacMan. The PacMan’s very controversial lifestyle is kind of affecting the way I feel for him as a Boxer.

Anyway, I created a new character named Erik Morales and like his RL counterpart, I made him a boxer. I also spent hours trying to make him look as closely as possible to Erik Morales and I think I did a good job with it. I also made the following for the avatar:

  • a Boxing Robe/Hood which has a Mexican Flag design.
  • an El Terrible Boxing Shorts
  • and a replica WBC Championship Belt

Now I need Boxing Shoes, Socks and Boxing Tapes. If I can’t get them then I’ll just have to create them I guess. Oh, the boxing gloves? I bought them at Averlast Boxing Gym.

I went in-world and joined a few boxing groups but the one I like best was Averlast and besides I’ve been there before and I like their setup. My plan was to stay in-character as much as possible, not as Erik Morales, but as an Erik Morales boxing fan and a boxer but unfortunately they have this very tough security measures. I was asked with questions relating more to my account rather than to my in-world character. I was a little bit offended and turned off by what I feel was unnecessary but what can I do? It’s their place and I’m just a guest. I have to respect and abide by their wishes or be kicked out or leave.

My reasons for not giving them the information they want are because I want to stay in-character and to protect my own privacy as well. They want to protect their place and I want to protect my privacy which is I’m not really hiding. In fact, visit the about me page and you’ll know who I am. That is one thing I am proud of, that I am not an anonymous internet user.

WOW Guides

Anyway, it all boils down to respect and to show that I respect them and their place I gave them the name of my main account which is Kabalyero Kidd (although I don’t use that avatar that much in Second Life) and I believe they, at least the security person, was happy with it.

The security person gave me their reason for doing checks. He said that they have a very long ban list and he was just trying to keep those that were banned from getting in by using alts. I think that kind of security check isn’t full proof because anyone can lie and I assume that if an avatar does not comply with their check then that avatar will be banned immediately from the place which is a little extreme IMHO because there are people who will not, no matter what you do or say, disclose information to a stranger. In doing your job to keep banned people out, unknowingly, you might be offending really honest people who just prefers to remain anonymous.

Well, these are just my opinions and observation. The internet is a global community and Second Life is part of that community. Each individual is different, that what makes being human great, something that is offensive to one may not be offensive to another. I know that we must protect ourselves from all sorts of negative elements in-world but instant banning is a little extreme. I’d rather be the victim than be the criminal and besides you can always Abuse Report them if they become persistent with their efforts to cause grief.

Now, I must break out of character and present to the world, Erik Morales.

You will find Erik Morales hanging out at Averlast Boxing Gym (that is if he is not banned after this post, LOL)!

Sorry if you felt offended, Rom. We had some griefing incidents recently, and we’re trying to find our balance with security.

Thanks for sticking with us, though. Can we look forward to seeing Erik in tomorrow’s tournament?

You ALMOST got ejected and banned… hehehe. You made couple of mistakes ;p
Don’t think that I did not know that you were new from day one ;p

From the start when you showed up under Erik account, I suspected that you were not new. The reason why I wanted to ban you from the start was because you had lied to me and I thought that you had something to hide. But you were not armful… we kept an eye on you and thanks for the laugh that was seriously hilarious to discover who you were and yes it’s Len our security guard who discovered it and IMed me about it… ^^

I typed a very long reply then when I read it back it’s the same as my post above. :D

@Abel Undercity, like what I’ve said it’s your place and I must respect your wishes. You seem very different, I sense humility in you. ;) Thanks for dropping by!

Well, it’s not my place. I just work for Karine. But please bear in mind that what you did for journalistic purposes is also a classic griefer tactic, which would set off alarm bells in anyone who has had problems with them. As we have at Averlast in recent days.

As far as I’m concerned, this is a misunderstanding springing from a conflict between your desire to maintain your journalistic integrity and our desire to preserve the environment of the gym. It is my hope that this will be treated as “water under the bridge”, and that we all look back on it and laugh someday.

Unfortunately, I am in no position to debate anything. I’d really like to visit as the character I created but it’s no longer the same. The illusion is broken and besides the character has caused me too much grief to continue using it.

Anyway, I had fun being a boxer even if it’s just for 2 days :) and the grief it caused me is enough to last me an entire Second Life time. Ha ha ha! :D

I might drop by this Friday as Rom to watch and get some video of the actual boxing matches because I’m very curious to how it will play out in a real in-world match.

Dude, role playing is DEAD. Remember that! Paranoia has engulfed everyone both in SL and in RL.

If you want to role play, get a console and play solo role playing games.
