One issue that most creators face in Second Life is the ability to externally save or backup their creations. Before, this was very unlikely but not anymore. With the help of alternative viewers like Meerkat and Greenlife Emerald, creators can now safely backup or save their creations in their computers through a simple and easy to use Export/Import process.
Now, don’t think of this as copybotting because these viewers only allow you to save, backup or export your own creations and not the creation of others. Simply put if the object is not your own creation then you won’t be able to export or save it. The export tool of these viewers respect object permissions and can’t be used for ripping or copybotting unlike CryoLife, NeilLife and other ripper viewers that are currently out there.
The process of exporting and importing using Meerkat and Greenlife Emerald is almost the same except with Meerkat instead of Export they have Backup. Here is how:
- Rez the object you wish to backup/export in-world
- Right-click on the object and keep selecting More until Export or Backup appears on the Pie Menu
(again, Export and Backup will only appear if the object you are trying to export or backup or save is your own creation) - On the Pie Menu, click on Export or Backup
(a save dialogue box will appear with untitled.xml as the default filename) - Select a location where you want to save the XML file, name it and click on the Save button
Importing the object back in-world or to any grid is very easy as well. Here is how:
- On the Main Menu, choose File > Import (or File > Import Linkset for Greenlife Emerald)
- Select the XML file you wish to import and click on the Open button
- Watch in amazement as the object is created out of thin air just like magic
Now, you can safely save/export/backup all your creations in Second Life in your computer. In cases where Second Life messes up and eats up your inventory, you can easily import them back in-world. That’s not all, if by chance you decide to quit Second Life and move on to other grids then you can also easily import your creations in them.

[...] Importing objects from an XML file back to Second Life is as easy as uploading a texture. Of course, you’ll have to use a viewer that has that feature enabled like Meerkat or Greenlife Emerald. [...]
I exported some of my own created objects, but the xml files contain only sl login headers, nothing more.
