Raising, farming and/or breeding virtual animals like sionChickens is very interesting for me. It has a certain appeal that attracts me to it but unfortunately I had to give it up because it is too darn expensive. At first, I thought I could make a few linden dollars breeding eggs but it was not the case. In the end, my expenses from the entire operation outweigh any returns I make. It was not profitable enough. In fact, I make more in selling chicken related stuff like coops, pens, farm sets and others. So, I stopped raising sionChickens and just stick with making chicken related items.
Because of the high-cost of raising sionChickens, other creators took the concept of sionChickens and created their own breedable animals. Thus, Petable Turtles was born. Petable is a brand created by two Second Life residents which currently carries one type of pet and that is the Turtle. Additional types of pets are planned in the future.
The process of raising Petable Turtles is almost the same as raising sionChickens with a few differences making it easy to learn specially for those who are thinking of switching from sionChickens to Petable Turtles. One of the most distinct difference between sionChickens and Petable Turtles is that Petable has a wearable HUD that displays everything you need to know about your pet. Another difference is that instead of having a EULA that scares consumers or customers of lawsuits and other legal actions by the creator, Petable has what they call Petable Customer Bill of Rights which is a more customer friendly agreement than the sionChicken EULA (which gives you no rights at all).
Rather than a huge End User License Agreement (EULA), Petable feels it would be more beneficial to have a Customer Bill of Rights.
As the customer, you have a right to:
I. Purchase a working product – if you have issues getting it to work and nothing in the Troubleshooting notecard is working, Petable will do everything in our power to make it work for you
II. Get customer support – once again, if something isn’t working properly, we will do everything in our power to make it work for you
III. Get free updates for what your purchase – if we make changes or bugfixes to a product, you deserve to get them for free
IV. Create new products based off of the Petable API – that’s the entire purpose of this, and we encourage you to use it
V. Have fun! – it’s our philosophy that if it’s not fun, it’s not worth doing, either in Second Life or real life
As the creator of the product, Petable is entitled to:
I. Have a secure product – attempts to hack or manipulate our system will not be tolerated
II. Release updates – our job is to make the product better, and we do so by releasing product updates that will either introduce new functionality or fix existing bugs
III. Change this Bill of Rights – we may need to change this in the future as the need arises, but we will notify customers via our blog and both the Petable Update Group and Petable Chat Group before doing so
IV. Have fun! – just like it applies to our customers, it applies to us as well. We’re here to have fun just like you!
Read it? See any threat of legal action? It even encourages you to have fun. Amazing! I guess sionChickens wouldn’t be hated so much by many residents specially by estate owners if the creator shows some caring instead of just caring about himself. LOL!
Currently, you can get a Starter Kit at Petable’s Main Store which as of this writing is a small space in a small corner. The Starter Kit cost 270L$ and includes everything you need to get started.
- 4 random turtle eggs out of a possible 6 choices (none will be from the same family trees
- 4 small bags of food (enough for a week for each of the four turtles)
- 1 tiny food bowl
- Turtle HUD
For updates and information about Petable Turtles and other future pets, please visit the Petable Blog and/or join their two official groups in-world.
Me? I currently have 4 turtles from the Starter Kit and I must say that they are, compared to sionChickens, virtually lag free. My only complaint right now is that each turtle is about 8 prims and I think, if they really wanted to, they can still further reduce this number to 6 prims per turtle.
Well, there are lots more to know about this new product and the best way to learn them all is by experiencing them first-hand. I am also still learning and discovering all I can about these turtles right now so why not learn and discover with me. Grab your Petable Turtle Kit and start raising your first turtles today. ^_^
Update: Maybe they’re not as friendly, fun and helpful as I thought. LOL! The chat group was pretty active so I asked a couple of questions (legitimate questions) and both were totally ignored. I guess if I want to know something I just have to read about it or lurk in the chat group hoping someone they’re friends with ask the same question I intend to ask. T_T
