One popular way of building an online community is by setting up a forum. Forums allow members to communicate with each other and share ideas and opinions about various issues. One forum which I am a member of is under slapt.me. Slapt.me is an alternative online marketplace for Second Life where merchants in Second Life can list there items for sale for FREE. In their forum, merchants are also allowed to post or announce their newly listed items in the forums Second Life Classifieds under New Products.
Yesterday, I finished creating 4 sets of Christmas Shirts. Each set has a different design and comes in 3 colors. Take note, each set comes in 3 colors ONLY. I listed them in XstreetSL.com, metaLIFE, Metaverse Exchange and slapt.me. After listing I posted an announcement for them in metaLIFE, Metaverse Exchange and slapt.me’s forum. I posted each set in its own thread since each set is different from the other.
Unfortunately, a member of slapt.me posted a reply on one of my forum post saying, “posting such an announcement once should be sufficient if you ask me. Or at least wait until it”‘walked out” of page one to re post”. It was clear that he assumed that all four posts were the same when in fact they were for different set of items.
Not wanting to violate any guidelines, I immediately contacted the owner of slapt.me and asked if posting about newly listed items are allowed or not and he said that it is allowed. It is better to contact the owner than to debate or argue with a member.
After that I thought everything was okay but I felt that the last reply by this particular member was very sarcastic.
“Ahhh I see. I only saw the same T-shirts and the same text. So probably 754,479 possible colors (and posts) to come.”
I know that he is a very opinionated individual but sometimes sarcastic opinions are just plain rude and stubborn. Seriously, 754,479 colors? If he asked then I could have told him that there are only 3 colors in each set and not 754,479.
As far as I know, I wasn’t violating any posting guidelines and I’m sure wasn’t spamming since each item is different. I still have more than 300 different items waiting to get listed in slapt.me and of course I would also like to announce them in the forum. I just hope that I don’t encounter this kind of situation again from other forum members.
I wouldn’t mind if I was violating any forum guidelines but in this case I wasn’t and to quote the owner, “Of course its allowed thats why we have the new products section for you to post your new items etc.”
