Update: It seems that LL has released a new release candidate viewer with the new search as part of the client. Downloading it to see if the web version is the same as the in-world version of the new Second Life search.
Second Life is currently developing a new search system for Second Life. I don’t know if it’s the same system but you can do searches for People, Places, Groups, Objects, Land and Classified Ads using your browser. Yup, you don’t need to login to search for stuff in-world just use the URL below:

For example to search for an avatar or people type this in your browser’s address field:

I believe the system is still in BETA but I’ve been using it for quite a while now to search for almost anything without logging in into Second Life.
