These past few days, a notecard containing information about an alternative Second Life viewer called NeilLife was being distributed around in-world. Well, there is really nothing wrong about distributing an information notecard but using another resident’s notecard, and not your own, to distribute any information is wrong. Why? Because that person who owns the notecard will show as creator and not the one who is the original author of the information. Now, this can be bad for the person whose notecard was used specially if the notecard contains information about something that is illegal or in violation of Second Life’s TOS.
This is exactly what happened to a resident named Gwyneth Llewelyn. A notecard with her as creator was used by the developer of NeilLife, an alternative Second Life viewer with non-TOS compliant features, to distribute information about it. This, of course, alarmed many residents who are concerned about protecting content and thus warnings were issued throughout the grid. Unfortunately, since Gwyneth Llewelyn was named as creator of the NeilLife notecards that were distributed she suddenly became the center of attention by almost everyone in-world. (more…)
